Activities concerning novel coronavirus have begun
In light of the current pandemic, scientists at TWINCORE have designed a number of research projects dealing with several aspects of the novel corona virus SARS-CoV-2. These projects match the fields of expertise present at TWINCORE, from virology or immunology to computational biology. Most of the research projects will help to understand characteristics of the virus and the disease it causes, while some projects may even contribute to the treatment of COVID19.
Some of the projects analyse the attachment onto and the entry into the host cell of the virus or search for risk factors for a COVID-19 infection by bioinformatic methods. Furthermore, already running studies of patient cohorts will be expanded to include a test for the novel corona virus. In one of the research projects the scientists are screening a collection of drugs which are already licensed to treat different other diseases for candidates with antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2.
