Research foci Infectious Disease Epidemiology
The institute focuses on the development of tools to assess the burden of infectious disease and the effectivity of prevention strategies in the fight against persistent infections. It is vital for the assessment of prevention strategies, like vaccination campaigns, to distinguish vaccine-induced from infection-induced immune responses. The institute puts special emphasis on viral hepatitis and vaccine-preventable diseases with high epidemiological burden like influenza and measles. The aim is to develop the differential serology into a pivotal tool to be used reliably in population-based sero-surveys.
Therefore the institute focuses on the development of novel diagnostic approaches optimised for epidemiological applications such as the multiplex serolomics platform. To facilitate large-scale epidemiological surveys, the institute is developing a Luminex® based multiplex serology platform which allows testing for multiple antibodies from different infections in one assay with minimal serum consumption.
